Do I need a SIEM if I already use CIPP?
Not simply because you use CIPP. The decision depends on what you need to monitor, what is already configured and who investigates the alerts.
CIPP already includes monitoring and alerts
CIPP is a broad Microsoft 365 administration platform for MSPs, with provisioning, standards and management functions. It also supports audit-log alerts, recurring checks and configurable notifications. Some alert actions can carry out remediation when enabled.
That creates genuine overlap with a monitoring tool. If CIPP already surfaces the events you need and your engineers have a workable review process, adding another application may not be necessary.
When the SIEM question becomes relevant
A full SIEM is worth assessing when the requirement extends beyond the supported Microsoft 365 workflow: for example, investigating activity across endpoints, firewalls, servers and cloud applications. CIPP and a focused monitoring application should not be assumed to supply that broader capability.
What if you only want Microsoft 365 alerts?
You may not want a wider administration toolkit at all. Your existing process might already cover provisioning, offboarding and tenant configuration, while your immediate need is to notice new inbox rules, unexpected forwarding or suspicious sign-ins.
That is the requirement Vigil Alerts is built around. It is a focused Microsoft 365 monitoring and alerting application. Your engineers review the activity and perform any account response. It does not automatically change customer accounts.
Choosing between the workflows
- If you want a broad Microsoft 365 administration toolkit with alerting, assess CIPP against both parts of the requirement.
- If you want a focused alert review application, demonstrate the relevant events in Vigil.
- If you need wider log correlation and hunting, assess a SIEM.
- If you need someone to investigate outside your own coverage, assess a managed security service.
Could you use CIPP and Vigil together?
They can be evaluated for separate jobs: administration in one tool and a monitoring workflow in the other. That does not mean both are required. It can duplicate collection, notifications and subscription or infrastructure costs, so demonstrate the added value before paying for a second tool.
No automatic integration, synchronisation, broader detection coverage or faster alerting than CIPP is claimed here.
What makes the deployment choice useful?
Vigil can be self-hosted on your infrastructure, or hosted on a separate virtual server and application instance for your organisation. An MSP can monitor several customer tenants within that installation. CIPP also has self-hosted and hosted choices; self-hosting alone is not a unique Vigil feature.
Price the job you need done
Vigil starts at £49/month self-hosted or £149/month dedicated hosted for up to 250 monitored users, excluding VAT. CIPP’s self-hosted software is free, so we do not claim a lower software price than CIPP. The reason to consider Vigil is whether its focused workflow fits your team, not an invented saving over free software.
